Bio e Storia dei Judas Priest
La band si forma a Birmingham, Inghilterra, nel 1969. Il nucleo iniziale comprende il chitarrista K.K. Downing, il bassista Ian Hill (unico membro rimasto della formazione originale) e il cantante Al Atkins (che sceglie il nome ispirandosi a una canzone di Bob Dylan). Gli esordi sono caratterizzati da un sound hard rock con influenze progressive, come si può ascoltare nel loro primo album del 1974, “Rocka Rolla”.
L’arrivo del cantante Rob Halford e del secondo chitarrista Glenn Tipton segna la svolta decisiva. Il sound diventa più aggressivo e cupo, definendo lo stile heavy metal che li renderà celebri. Album come “British Steel” (1980) e “Screaming for Vengeance” (1982) li consacrano tra i padrini dell’heavy metal, ispirando schiere di musicisti. L’immagine scenica con i loro abiti di pelle e borchie diventa iconica, contribuendo all’alone del metal.
L’uscita di scena di Halford nel 1992 segna un periodo di turbolenza. Vengono arruolati nuovi cantanti, ma il successo non è lo stesso. Nel 1990 affrontano una controversia legale legata a presunti messaggi subliminali in una canzone, accusati di incitare al suicidio. Nonostante le difficoltà, continuano a pubblicare album e rimanere sulla scena.
Il ritorno di Halford nel 2003 segna una reunion che entusiasma i fan. La band continua a pubblicare album e a fare tour mondiali, dimostrando una longevità invidiabile. Nel 2011 Downing lascia la band e viene sostituito da Richie Faulkner. Nel 2018 esce l’ultimo album Firepower e nel 2024 scatta un tour congiunto con i Saxon.
