Bio e Storia di Sting
Sting, pseudonimo di Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, è un cantautore, polistrumentista e attore britannico, nato a Wallsend, in Inghilterra, il 2 ottobre 1951.
Sting inizia a suonare la chitarra da adolescente e nel 1971 si trasferisce a Londra, dove inizia a esibirsi in piccoli club. Nel 1976, incontra il batterista Stewart Copeland e il chitarrista Henri Padovani, con i quali forma il gruppo rock/pop dei Police. Padovani viene però sostituito quasi subito da Andy Summers, dando vita alla formazione storica.
I Police danno vita a un progetto unico per l’epoca, che mischia reggae e rock, unendovi testi che trattano temi drammatici, come lo stalking (Every breath you take), l’amore disperato impossibile e il suicidio (So Lonely/Can’t stand losing you), la prostituzione (Roxanne). Nel 1985, dopo lo scioglimento dei Police, Sting intraprende una carriera solista di successo, pubblicando album come “The Dream of the Blue Turtles” (con due hit clamorose come Russians e If you love somebody), “Nothing Like the Sun”, “The Soul Cages” e “Ten Summoner’s Tales”.
La sua musica è caratterizzata da un’ampia gamma di influenze, che spaziano dal rock al pop, dal jazz al blues, fino alla musica classica. I suoi testi, spesso impegnati e introspettivi, affrontano temi come l’amore, la politica, la religione e l’ambiente. Sting è un artista poliedrico e versatile, che ha dimostrato le sue capacità anche come attore, recitando in film come “Quadrophenia” (tratto dal classico concept album degli Who), “Radio On” e “Dune”.
